Ashta Bhairava is the eight forms of Lord Kalabhairava. There are eight manifestations of Maha Bhairavars who controls the eight directions of this world. Every Bhairavar has eight sub Bhairavars under them. The greater part of the Bhairavars are led and controlled by one Maha Swarna Kala Bhairavar, who is the preeminent leader of time of this universe. Lord Bhairava favors the world together with his vahana (vehicle) “The Dog”.

Description
Lord Kaal Bhairav is called “Kshetra Palaka,” the Protector God. He guards various Kshetras and saves the sanctity and power of those holy places from negative and demonic elements. He guards the Kashi Kshetra which is known as Varanasi. Adi Shankaracharya calls him the King of Kashi in his Kalabhairava Ashtakam. Lord Kaalbhairava is also known as “Dhanda Pani” as he holds Danda, the stick in his hand. He has dogs as his vehicles. He destroys the internal enemies of humans: lust, ego, anger and greed, and bestows wisdom which liberates them.

Significance of Ashta Bhairava
Puranas mention 64 different forms of Bhairava who emerged from Lord Shiva. These 64 forms are further categorised into 8 forms of Bhairava called “Ashtanga Bhairavas”. The eight Bhairavas are: Asithanga Bhairava, Ruru Bhairava, Chanda Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, Unmatta Bhairava, Kapala Bhairava, Bhishana Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava. The eight Bhairavas guard and control the eight directions and have a vahana for themself. It is believed that worshipping the eight Bhairavas on the day of Kalashtami is a sacred and rare opportunity and results in complete destruction of enemies, negative forces, and inner enemies like greed, ego, lust, anger and procrastination.
